Granite, while it is a natural material, requires a lot of energy to cut and transport. When it comes to granite countertops, you should try and clean them daily with a mild cleaning solution. For maximum longevity, you should consider resealing them once a year to prevent wear.
Similarly, quartz countertops should be cleaned with a mild solution; however, unlike granite, they won’t need additional sealing every year. This could be beneficial for those who want the lowest amount of maintenance possible, though sealing itself is a quick and easy process that only takes about 20 minutes to complete.
Granite countertops are highly durable. Highly resistant to heat you won’t have to worry about placing hot dishes onto the surface. That said, due to its porous nature it can be stained if liquids are allowed to set on the surface for too long.
Quartz countertops are sort of the opposite of granite, as they aren’t porous and are resistant to chipping and staining. However, they can be damaged by heat meaning you’ll have to be cautious about what dishes you place on it. While this can be prevented through the use of heat-absorbing pads if you’re used to sitting hot pans on your counter it’s something to keep in mind. Additionally, because they are actually harder than granite and non-porous, you won’t have to worry about bacteria accumulating.
Both granite and quartz countertops have their pros and cons, and ultimately which one you choose will come down to exactly what you’re looking for. Oftentimes aesthetics is the largest factor, and in that case, your choice will come down to which you think goes best with your design. Whether you choose granite or quartz, you’re guaranteed to end up with a gorgeous and eye-catching countertop.
